SMILE -- a support group set up by people who suffer chronic pain has been officially launched in Haslingden.

Ten patients who attended the pain management programme at Blackburn's Queens Park Hospital, Blackburn, set up the support group after learning how to positively cope with pain by way of gentle stretching and strengthening exercises and by using relaxation techniques.

They also learned about the medical issues and the psychology of dealing with depression, anger and negative feelings that are often endured by chronic pain sufferers.

The group was formed in January and meets every Thursday at Haslingden Community Link, Bury Road, Haslingden.

Pfizer Pharmaceuticals has supported the group with a £1,000 cheque.

This has paid for exercise mats, pillows, a hi-fi and other equipment.

To date the group has 18 members and many supporters and guests.

A third pain management course is running at Queens Park Hospital and the group hopes the patients may become new members.
