HEATWAVE: Bury sweltered in the high 80s as a heatwave hit Britain. As temperatures soared outside it went even higher inside, forcing a walkout by production workers at Warth paintmakers Donald Macpherson and Co. A number of other local companies were providing free cold drinks to keep employees cool.
LEAD-ING THE HIGH LIFE: A man was caught by police after he was found standing on a ledge 15 feet above the ground stealing lead in a derelict store. A court heard how when the thief was asked to climb down he found that he could not and the fire brigade had to be called to rescue him.
HAUNTED HOUSE: A police tracker dog was spooked at a Bury cinema after a ghost-like figure had been seen in the foyer. Police went to the Classic cinema after receiving a report of a "shadowy figure" on the premises. They carried out an extensive search but found nothing. Two hours later they were called to the cinema again when the shadowy figure was spotted for the second time. This time an Alsatian dog was sent in but within minutes it came back whimpering, its fur standing on end.
Only then did police learn that the cinema was thought to be haunted by a man said to have hanged himself in an upper room.
HOMEWARD BOUND: A woman, released by hijackers who seized an Air France plane, arrived at her parents' home in Prestwich. Mrs Patricia Hyman (38), who lived in Israel, was allowed off the plane at Benghazi, Libya, by the terrorists when she told them she was flying home to be with her father who was seriously ill. The Foreign Office advised Mrs Hyman not to speak to anyone about the hijacking.
THE END: Film censorship in Bury was ended. The council's policy and resources committee decided that councillors no longer have a say about what the public should or should not see, providing the films had already been censored.
