TWO of the most prolific run-makers in recent Transco Lancashire League history go head-to-head this weekend when top-six rivals Enfield and Rawtenstall meet over successive days.

Enfield's Martin Van Jaarsveld leads the scoring charts so far this summer with 741 league runs at an average of over 100.

His unbeaten century against Burnley last weekend took him past Matthew Mott's tally of 694 and whoever scores the most heavily this weekend could well determine which sides leads the other in the table by tomorrow night.

With the re-arranged fixtures from May 27 being played today, all the sides play back-to-back fixtures with Enfield hosting Rawtenstall today and then heading for the Worswick Memorial Ground tomorrow.

But as well as Van Jaarsveld's runs, skipper Mark Greenhalgh believes the South African could also provide the key with the ball, having taken 41 wickets already -- figures that this week helped earn him a new contract at Dill Hall Lane for next summer.

"It's good to get that done early," Greenhalgh said. "People know where they stand and we know we've got a top professional for next season.

"We knew what he was capable of batting wise, but the great bonus has been his bowling. His general aura gets the players up before the game and he's good off the pitch as well. He's a club man."

Van Jaarsveld, who broke the run-scoring record for Lowerhouse two summers ago, has lifted Enfield from next-to-bottom spot last season to sixth place this.

And Greenhalgh is looking for that improvement to continue for the rest of the summer. He said: "It's given us confidence and that feeling that we're not going out and getting beaten every game. We've got a chance against any side.

"To finish in the top five would be excellent. I think it is possible. Everybody says Martin is coming into a rich vein of form but really I don't think he's ever been out of it.

"He's got over 700 runs in the league and around 900 in all. That's a hell of a lot of runs."

Rawtenstall will have similar ideas, however, and as they started the weekend just 21 points behind second-placed East Lancs, Greenhalgh acknowledged they will provide a stiff examination for a side strengthened by the recent return from college of Sam Reidy.

"It's going to be a tough weekend. Motty is a good pro but they've got good amateurs as well with Peter Seal and Kes (Keith Roscoe). They are a good side and we will have to be at our best to beat them," he added.

Tomorrow's fixtures: Accrington v Bacup, Burnley v Rishton, Colne v Ramsbottom, East Lancs v Church, Haslingden v Nelson, Rawtenstall v Enfield, Todmorden v Lowerhouse.
