DRINKERS at the Bay Horse, Roughlee, have got something new to look at - the landlady and landlord.

Laura Parsonage and David Ashton, both 34, have taken over the 17th century pub previously run by Val and Stuart Jefferies, who have left for Spain.

Laura and David signed up for a new scheme from Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprises.

Laura said: "We decided to use this option because we have the added security of financial and support backing.

"It has worked out really well so far and customers and locals have been brilliant in welcoming us into their community.

"We are going to do our very best to make a success of our time here."

Laura and David can look forward to continuous support from Scottish and Newcastle and can feel safe in the knowledge that they will always have backing.

Kay Sibbald, franchise manager for Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprises, said: "Although Laura and David have run pubs before, a franchise provides a safer route for those looking to set up their own pub.

"The benefit of a franchise is that an individual has the reassurance of a successful business concept supported by proven business systems designed to help the business run smoothly.

"A franchisee with Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprises is given ongoing support and training from the company via an allocated business development manager with whom regular review meetings are held.

"Giving people like Laura and David the opportunity to talk through any ideas, suggestions or concerns they may have about how the business is going."

Laura added: "We are going to extend opening times throughout the day and lengthen food serving times. We have seen how successful the pub was when Stuart and Val ran it, and we are looking to improve on that."
