Clarets boss Stan Ternent admits the high prices of the domestic transfer market have prompted him to look into Europe for potential new recruits.

Having successfully signed Nik Michopoulos last season, Ternent has followed that up this summer by bringing in Luigi Cennamo from Olympiakos as his new number two goalkeeper.

And the Turf Moor chief is also currently running the rule over Belgian midfielder Dimitri De Conde with the view to a possible move from Charleroi.

De Conde would cost a fee but that would almost certainly be considerably less than Ternent would have to pay for a similar British player of the same age and pedigree.

And Ternent confirmed that value-for-money shopping had turned his eyes to the Continent.

He said: "To get the quality of players we need who are as good as and better than we haver got, financially it is difficult for us.

"I feel I can get better deals with younger players from abroad.

That seems to be the case and that's the line we've gone down.

"It wasn't really planned like that. But I've been abroad a few times and it's just worked out that way and I'm hoping they can adapt."

Ternent is actively looking to strengthen his squad but is competing with the likes of big-spending Wolves, Birmingham and Watford, along with the three sides that were relegated from the Premiership last season.

He added: "A lot of sides in our division are looking to get into the big league, ourselves included.

"On a financial playing field we're perhaps not up with that lot at the moment but we are making progress and this season, with a bit of luck, the club should be in a profit situation.

"We want to kick on and see if we can get into the big league. It's difficult, but nothing comes easy."

Former Clarets defender Mark Winstanley has agreed a new contract with Third Division Carlisle United.
