NEW high-tech signs have been installed on Lancashire motorways to make it easier to drivie to the Open Golf Championship.

The signs, on the M6, M65 and M61, advise drivers to stick to the motorways to Royal Lytham rather than switch to minor roads.

The signs then guide motorists on to the M55 to the championship.

Highways Agency project manager, John Mather, said: "Lancashire Police estimate that at least 12,000 vehicles a day will be heading for Royal Lytham, in addition to thousands of holidaymakers also heading for the area.

" It is vital that this volume of traffic stays on the motorway system."

Sgt Steve Goode, of the Lancashire Police Motorway Policing Unit, added: "These signs are a key part of our traffic control strategy for the championship."
