THE passenger in a lorry which hit a notorious bridge is in hospital suffering from a broken neck.

Geoffrey Rawcliffe, aged 61, of Shakespeare Avenue, Great Harwood, was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary after the crash on Tuesday and was found to have sustained the fracture.

Today he was said to be "comfortable".

Mr Rawcliffe was sitting alongside skip lorry driver Stuart Wallis, also 61, of Arnside Close, Clayton-le-Woods, when the 18-tonne vehicle toppled over after hitting the bridge in Whalley Road, Langho.

Mr Wallace was discharged from hospital after treatment.

Lancashire County Council has pledged to take action to improve safety at the bridge, including repainting its side with warning chevrons, pruning trees on the approach to the overpass and putting red lines on the road.

In Wednesday's Lancashire Evening Telegraph it was incorrectly stated that Mr Rawcliffe had been discharged from Blackburn Royal Infirmary after treatment.

This was based on information supplied by the emergency services.

We apologise for the error.
