NEWTON HALL Swimming Club made a big splash at the summer sprint meeting in Holywell, North Wales, last weekend.

More than 40 of the club's swimmers competed, and over half of them got through to finals in a programme contested by 300 swimmers from across the region.

All the sprints were over 50 metres at all disciplines and age groups.

Pride of place went to Bobby Moss (14) who won the freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly finals and came third in the backstroke. He also swam the anchor leg in the winning 4x50 metre freestyle relay along with Mark Brewell, Adam Carlisle and Richard Mineur. Also in the 14-years age group, Nikki Moss came second in the backstroke and sixth in the breaststroke.

There were eight finalists in the 10-and-under age group with James Butterworth winning the butterfly and coming fourth in the freestyle. Other finalists were Michelle Skinner - fourth fly; Natasha Spencer - second breaststroke, fourth freestyle; Daniel Penswick - fourth backstroke; Laura White - second backstroke; Tina Smith - fifth backstroke; Jamie Melling - sixth breaststroke, and Kaya Smith - sixth breaststroke.

Victoria Crawford secured first place in the backstroke and third in freestyle and fly for the 11-years age group, while Karen Skelly got a second and two sixth places in the same disciplines for the 13-years age group.

The 12-years age group fared better with Jenny Westworth winning the backstroke, coming runner up in the fly and fourth in the freestyle. Melissa Taylor swam third in the fly and fourth in the backstroke while sole 12-year-old boy Andrew Houghton won the breaststroke, was runner up in the fly and came fourth in the freestyle. Hollie Jones also came third in the freestyle and fourth in the fly. The 15-years age group was represented by Nicola Butterworth, who was runner up in the backstroke and got two third positions in the freestyle and fly, and Richard Mineur who came fifth in the backstroke. For the 16-and-over age group Adam Carlisle won the freestyle, came runner up in the backstroke, was third in the breaststroke and came fifth in the fly while Mark Brewell came fourth in the freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.

For the girls, Jane Whittle came fourth in freestyle and fly while sister Helen Whittle came third in the fly, breaststroke and backstroke and fifth in the freestyle. The 14-and-over girls' relay team won their event while the girls 13-and-under team came third.

The performances of Adam Carlisle and Richard Mineur were particularly encouraging because both were returning to form after injuries. Helen Whittle was also making a welcome return after spending a year in Australia.
