A BUNCH of elderly neighbours are campaigning to have a bus stop returned to its original position.

The introduction of a pelican crossing for children opposite Haydock High School has resulted in the stop being moved further down the road.

It means that for many people living in Coopers Lane, Station Road and Clipsley Lane the distance in walking to the new bus stop is simply too far.

Mrs Harrison, who suffers from osteoperosis, told The Star: "It is absolutely ridiculous the way in which the bus stop has been moved. There are a number of disabled people living nearby who are struggling to walk to where the new stop is.

"For many years there has been no problems and we have been able to travel to areas such as Earlestown, Ashton and Wigan. I realise that making things safer for children is a priority but the way things are now a lot of people have to get a taxi to go and do their shopping which as you can imagine is very expensive over a period of time.

"We are currently asking people in the area to sign a petition to have the bus stop put back so that everybody can try and get back to leading some kind of normal life."

A spokesperson for Merseytravel, said: "Due to the amount of traffic congestion in the area a pelican crossing has been installed to help reduce the speed of cars especially at peak times.

"Therefore the bus stop had to be re-located in order to allow children to cross the road safely.

"Obviously certain residents in the area will be concerned but you have to try and strike a balance and hopefully nobody has been inconvenienced too much."
