AN 11-YEAR-OLD is the only child in almost 140 years never to have missed a day at a Leigh school.

Nathan Chadwick, of Hindley Green, has spent four years at St Peter's Junior School and has never been absent.

Nathan, whose favourite subjects are maths and science, left the school when term finished and plans to start at The Deanery High School, Wigan, in September.

Teachers at the school described Nathan as "unique". Headteacher Pat Jolley said: "We can't find anyone on record who has achieved this level of attendance since the school began in 1864."

Nathan's mum, Sue, is proud of her son's achievement. She said: "We had every confidence in him. He thoroughly enjoys school and never has to be forced to go. We are very pleased."

Nathan is a bright boy and gained a level five in his SATs - above the national average for his age.

Mrs Jolley said: "It just goes to show that good attendance can mean good marks." ALWAYS THERE: Pupil Nathan Chadwick has the best attendance record for almost 140 years
