A CONTROVERSIAL housing development in Carnforth has been given the go ahead despite local protests.

Lancaster councillors have overturned an earlier decision to block the Dixon Field development of 70 homes in the Crag Bank area, despite a petition from neighbours with 174 signatures.

Planning committee members were advised that blocking the scheme would open them up to a costly appeal by the developers which they would be unlikely to win.

Carnforth residents had claimed that the development contained too many new homes.

Concerns were also expressed about low water pressure in the area, though United Utilities has promised to fix that problem.

Protesters took advantage of new council rules which allow the public to speak at planning meetings.

Linda Wilson, who organised a petition against the development, told the meeting: "In the interests of the quality of life for present and future residents of Carnforth, I would ask to consider the number of houses and the access onto the A6."

Her speech failed to sway councillors. However, before the development goes ahead the developers, Merewood Homes, must put £25,000 towards improved public transport in the area.

They must also fund traffic calming measure on Redruth Drive, the road from which the estate will be accessed.
