POOL might be a game associated with smoke-filled pubs, but for Morecambe, it's big business.

Around 800 players have flocked to the town this week and organisers say they are delighted to be back in the resort.

"We were in Bridlington last year," explains chairman of the European and UK Pool Federation, Martin Kirwan: "But we are delighted to be back in Morecambe after two years.

"Morecambe is a handy place to get to from across the British Isles, and the Dome itself is an attraction.

"We have had a lot of interest from local people, and the local business community have got behind us as well. We have brought around 800 people to the town, and from the business point of view they are using the taxis, hotels and other local firms.

The organisers are planning a return to Morecambe next year, and hope to extend their stay beyond that, with teams from countries such as Estonia and Senegal expected to take part next year.

But not all the players have had long journey. Local girl Judith Wilson (pictured) who normally plays her pool at the Imperial, says she is enjoying the tournament.

"I've only been playing for about three years, but I was told about this tournament and decided to take part. I'm in the middle of my first round game, and its one frame each at the moment."

Lancaster City Council's cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration, Cllr James Airey, said: "Just a week or so after the successful Punk Festival, Morecambe is once again full with visitors to our district. With the Youth Games and the Championships it seems that Morecambe is the place to be for sport this week. "

"It is a pleasure to be able to welcome old friends and new visitors to our district. Both the International Youth Games and Pool Championships are excellent examples of what an important part sport and leisure can play in the promotion and regeneration of our whole district. It's great that the council and various sporting organisations can work together for the benefit of sports and the economy and it is wonderful to see the whole place so busy."

With junior, senior and special needs categories to be played, the competition continues at the Dome until August 4. Spectators are welcome.
