A RISHTON special needs centre has appealed for would-be volunteers to attend an open day next month to see what the centre offers and if they can help.

Lord's House Farm, in Wilpshire Road, began in 1993 as a riding therapy centre aimed at physiotherapy and physical exercise, as well as sensory and social development for people with special needs.

Now, it has expanded to introduce a wide range of additional activities towards achieving the same goals.

The centre, which has links with special schools in the county, is equipped with an educational animal centre Animal Magic, an all weather garden and a working classroom to teach basic practical skills to special needs students.

It has also introduced new courses in reflexology, massage, arts and crafts, music and even nail art.

Mary Walker, the centre's administrator, said: "Working with animals is a very popular and effective form of education as the rapport and confidence gained by the handling and interaction with the animals has produced astounding reactions among some of the adults and children, especially the ones with previously uncooperative or limited communication skills.

"But the centre does much more than just deal with horses and other animals and we are looking for volunteers to help for a couple of hours a week with the new activities."

The open day takes place from 2pm on Sunday August 5. For more information call 01254 877400.
