MOST shoppers have welcomed Leigh's new £30,000 piece of public art.

Council leader Lord Peter Smith unveiled the new gateway to the precinct, the Leigh Spindle 2001, outside Leigh's PDSA Shop in Bradshawgate last week to mixed reviews.

Some passers-by felt the money could have been better spent, others likened it to a Dalek and a May pole. Now the Journal wants to know what you think.

Designed and created by husband-and-wife team, Craig and Mary Matthews, the 5m stainless-steel cone is intended to be a gateway feature and focal point in the town centre.

It was created after extensive consultation with the town's customers, traders, the business community and councillors.

The top section depicts spinning, both textiles and cables, and the lower panels represent the town's industrial history and contemporary life in the town.

Chairman of the Leigh Town Centre Management Group, Coun Brian Jarvis, said: "The Spindle, which was paid for from Coalfield Challenge funds, was well received at the opening.

"I just hope the public at large will receive it in good grace and that the vandals will keep off.

"When it is lit up, it should look very attractive. It makes a attractive gateway feature to the Leigh pedestrianised zone and is something of a talking point.

"The Spindle should enhance all the other street furniture in the town centre, especially when the 10 new seats which are on order are delivered.

"The ones we took away are being done up and returned so there should be more seating than ever in Bradshawgate.

"Talks are also under way to introduce planters to enhance the area even further."
