TWO months ago Neil Hodgson was jokingly threatening to break Steve Hislop's leg when his motocrossing buddy from the Isle of Man almost stole first place at Donington.

And one year ago the two riders were involved in a first corner incident in Brands that could have left Hislop with a broken neck.

So it might appear a little surprising to hear Hodgson asking Hislop for a favour this weekend when more than 100,000 fans are again expected at the World Superbikes showpiece event of Brands Hatch.

Hislop, who leads the British Superbikes championship from John Reynolds, will be taking part as a wild card entrant.

Hodgson, who won that same title last year, is now regarded as one of the world's front-runners after a series of impressive rides including a double podium finish in the last round of Laguna Seca.

But, in order for him to turn respect into the hard currency of championship points, he needs to cash in on home territory this weekend.

And, if the British boys like Hislop and Reynolds can muscle the championship regulars out of contention, then the more ground Hodgson will make up in his bid to finish in the top three, with four rounds remaining.

The GSE Racing star said: "My masterplan is to win both races and have Steve and John second and third.

"Seriously though, if that were to happen it would be taking a lot of points off my championship rivals.

"Hopefully I could walk away with 50 points and the best some other riders achieve is fourth.

"It could make a massive difference in the championship.

"Hizzy and John have nothing to lose but people like Colin Edwards and Troy Bayliss don't want to get caught up in a dice with them because an accident could affect their chances of being champion."

Hodgson currently lies fifth in the standings, 20 points behind the in-form Ben Bostrom and with third-placed Troy Corser in his sights. And he knows that the unique atmosphere of Brands Hatch will provide all

the lift he needs.

The Burnley 27-year-old added: "I don't think the pressure will be any different to that at Donington.

"But this event takes on a special significance for the team, because GSE Group is based close to Brands Hatch and we will have hundreds of guests to entertain over the weekend.

"The fans always create a fantastic atmosphere at Brands Hatch. Last year, as a wild card rider, I was lucky to get a win and a second place. It was one of the best days of my life.

"However, the bad luck I encountered at the end of last season means I can't afford to let my defences down."

Bayliss leads the championship with 276 points, 53 ahead of Edwards who in turn is just eight in front of Corser. Bostrom has 197 while Hodgson is on 177.
