FOR thousands of students up and down the country there is nothing as stressful as waiting for exam results.

When they open that envelope they find out if years of hard work has paid off.

A single piece of paper shapes the rest of their lives.

Why, then, can an examination board get it wrong so badly and leave our youngsters pulling at their hair as they wait for the results that never turned up?

EdExcel says its processed 3.6 million grades this summer including the new AS-levels.

The Government has already promised an inquiry.

But that's no compensation for the hundreds of teenagers across East Lancashire waiting to see if they have made the grade and if they can win that vital university place.
