BLACKPOOL has gone potty over a display of superloos on the Promenade this week.

Residents and visitors were invited to take a peek at possible new facilities for the town from superloo firm JC Decaux on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The move is part of Blackpool Borough Council's Best Value Review which promises to deliver cost-effective, quality services by the most effective and efficient means.

Three more companies will also showcase their wares in the WC department throughout September with proposals then being submitted to the council for consideration.

Coun Henry Mitchell was one of the first to pop in at his convenience and is flushed with pride at the plans. "I think they're great and I'm sold on them. They blend in tastefully with the background and would be put in areas where they are most needed such as Talbot Square.

"I'm also delighted to see the Claremont toilets have finally been closed indefinitely and my thanks must got to the Citizen for their reports."

But not everyone is as happy with the new plans. Unison members patrolled the Prom this week urging people to sign a petition saying they didn't agree with lavatory attendants losing jobs.

A Unison spokesperson said: "We are opposed to the loss of jobs and bringing in private companies who are only taking on technicians."

Senior cleansing officer for Blackpool Borough Council, Bob Holt, said: "The feedback on the superloos has been excellent so far. Most of the visitors I met on Tuesday were elderly and disabled and have been quite complimentary.

He added: "It isn't a fact that people are going to lose their jobs."

Blackpool Pleasure Beach boss Geoffrey Thompson is also glad to hear about the recent closure of Claremont conveniences after backing cries to close them for good. "I'm delighted that the council have taken note of our request to update facilities and look forward to the facilities being installed."

Catch Adshell and Danfo's displays from September 11-13 and Healthmatic's products from September 18-20 on the Promenade opposite West Street next to North Pier from 10am to 7pm.
