IWAS enraged by the comments of Peter Morgan, assistant director of education and lifelong learning with Blackburn with Darwen Council, about the school bus service between Little Harwood and Pleckgate School (LET, September 11).

If, at 8.25am childrena child cannot board the bus to school because it is full and they then walk to school, they would not arrive on time and would be marked down as 'late' on their record -- two lates and they receive a detention through no fault of their own.

If children cannot board the bus after school because the bus is full, then Mr Morgan suggests the children should walk. Yes, children should be able to walk to and from school, but, sadly, today's society has changed and this is not a safe option.

Does something have to happen to a child to make the council decide to put on an extra bus?

He also suggests that children should walk half a mile to Four Lane Ends to catch a regular bus. Apart from this not pleasing the general public, where would the children catch the bus to? I certainly would not like my children going into town after school.

If Mr Morgan looks at a map of Blackburn, he will see that Four Lane Ends is in the opposite direction to Little Harwood.

Maybe the council would like more chaos on Pleckgate Road at 3.30pm and have more parents picking up their children -- 30 children not allowed on the bus and 30 more cars coming to pick them up.

Maybe he should take a drive down Pleckgate Road at 3.30pm to see what the traffic situation is without these extra cars.

Most councils in Britain are encouraging people to use public transport and leave their cars at home. Is Blackburn different?
