THE "Barlick Bugs" event will go ahead as planned this weekend despite a vandal attack in which a 25ft wide spider was squashed.

The superbug invasion has caused a stir in the town with the sudden appearance of an swarm of insects including dragonflies, ants and spiders.

Despite the weekend damage the event will still be held.

One of the organisers from the Barnoldswick community arts group, County Coun David Whipp, commented: "Sadly the 25ft spider now looks as if it has been squashed

"That is something which happens to a lot of spiders but I think it is still alive and will be restored by the weekend."

He added: "It is unfortunate that this damage should be caused after such hard work by so many people. The people who have done it must have smaller brains than the insects they damaged."

The bugs are all friendly-faced creatures sculpted from recycled material and erected as part of the week-long festival.

Scores of local people, including children, helped local artist Keith Noden-Thompson make more than 50 flags and bug sculptures

Local army cadets helped cage the 25ft spider that was spinning its web on Station Road. Keith has worked with disabled residents from St Andrews House, schoolchildren, businesses and residents to create the varied display.

The climax of the festival is on Saturday when there will be free 'have-a-go' workshops, a variety show, poetry readings, piano recitals, a youth stage and street performers during what is dubbed an 'Artful' day.

Taking place at more than a dozen venues, the day also features a flea market, bug hunts, craft fair, art exhibition, pavement artist competition and street performances

Originally scheduled for midsummer, the event was postponed when foot and mouth overwhelmed the area.
