WHEN David Astin told his wife Sue they'd scooped a big lottery win on their wedding anniversary she thought he was joking.

But Sue, 44, of Clitheroe, soon realised that her husband's weekly wind-up was in fact reality, and the couple are now celebrating after matching five numbers and the bonus ball to win £85,864.

Now the Astins are contemplating what to do with their win, with David planning to buy his dream car -- a BMW.

Saturday was also a double celebration for the couple as it marked their 17th wedding anniversary. David said: "We couldn't afford to go out, so we were watching the lottery draw. We've had the same numbers since the start and have had three of four balls in the past.

"The most we had won was £70. But as each ball came out I kept saying 'We've got that one'. My wife thought I was winding her up."

Sue, who works in Tesco's in Clitheroe, added: "He used to joke every week that we'd won, so I didn't believe him. When I realised he was telling the truth I could not take it in."

Saturday's winning numbers were 2, 9,15,17,40 and 48 and the bonus ball was 23.

David, 41, who works for Castle Cement in Clitheroe, said: "We kept checking the numbers over and over."

Sue added: "We decided to wait until we could check Teletext to see how much we had won, so it was about 10.40pm when we actually rang the lottery hotline to say we'd won.

A keen football supporter and member of Mytton Fold Golf Club for five years, David's winning combination was chosen when the National Lottery first started, using numbers from Liverpool FC's players.

Rob Jones (two), Ian Rush (nine), Jamie Redknapp (15), and Steve McManaman (17), with the number 40 chosen randomly, and the bonus ball courtesy of Robbie Fowler (23) contributed to the winning formula.
