TWO police officers who risked their lives to save a man from a house fire have received bravery awards.

PC Michael Baker and PC Julie Fort based at Nelson police station, were presented with a commendation from the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society by Pendle MP Gordon Prentice during a ceremony at Burnley police station.

On January 10, only ten days after a fatal house fire in the town, the officers were called to a fire at a house in Bradshaw Street, Nelson.

They saw a large amount of smoke coming from he house and on looking through the living room window saw 41-year-old Brian Fleming, lying on a sofa.

The officers forced open the front door and without regard for their own lives went through the smoke-filed hallway and back kitchen/ dining area which was well alight to reach Mr Fleming and escort him to safety.

Sgt Jonathan Yates, who put the officers forward for the award, said: "Having witnessed the scale of the fire and talking to the senior fire officer who attended the scene I was left in no doubt that had Mr Fleming been exposed to the fire for a further five minutes he could have been killed."

He added: "The officers had to pass through the room where the fire was burning to get in and out, twice exposing themselves to extreme danger".

Divisional Commander of Pennine Police Chief Supt John Knowles added: "PC Fort and PC Baker displayed extreme courage and presence of mind in what turned out to be a life-threatening situation.

"I am delighted they have received official recognition for their brave actions. The are a credit to Lancashire Constabulary and richly deserve the awards."
