WE wish to thank the people of Bury and district for their support, not least in Christian Aid Week in May when, for the fifth successive year, an increase in the amount given was achieved.
The house-to-house collection amounted to £20,546 and the final total for the year, including donations, was £22,784, an increase of 18 per cent on last year.
Christian Aid devotes money to those whose lives are destroyed by drought or disaster, by flood or famine, but most of its income is used for long-term development in 60 Third World countries. It is given to people irrespective of colour or creed. Funds are used to provide seeds, wells, irrigation, health care, trade training and community development.
Thank you also to the hundreds of volunteers, from 39 local churches, who were among the 300,000 collectors nationwide who raised £12.5 million and established another new record in Christian Aid Week.
Mr John Logan, area co-ordinator for Greater Manchester, can be contacted at the Greater Manchester Christian Aid Office by those who wish to take advantage of the illustrated talk he provides on his visit to Israel/Palestine earlier in the year. Through his experience, they can gain a deeper understanding of the current crisis.
JOHN BISSON,
for Bury Christian
