GENEROUS people from Rossendale raised more than £13,000 for the Cancer Research Campaign in the last year.

A cheque for £9,116 was presented by the Bacup committee chairman Geoff Law to Professor Iain Hagan of the University of Manchester, who is involved in research at the Paterson Institute at Christie Hospital.

Mr Law said: "We have a surplus from money raised and that will go towards equipment for a project by Dr Mark Rosenberg, who is also from the University of Manchester. He is investigating why some organs in the body reject chemotherapy. He needs £10,700 and we are working towards that now."

The money was raised from a number of sources, £6,800 was donated, £3,000 from in memorise payments, a house-to house collection in the Bacup area realised £2,800 and an Easter sale of work raised £750.

The group is Bacup-based but covers all Rossendale apart from Whitworth, which has its own committee.

Prof Hagan was presented with the cheque at a fundraising quiz night at the Rose 'n' Bowl, Stacksteads. The next event will be a supper dance at Bacup Leisure Hall on October 27 from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £3.50.

Rossendale Male Voice Choir and soloist Janet Lancaster will perform at a concert at Trinity Baptist Church on November 10 at 7.30pm. Tickets £3.
