PRESTON'S over-65s and other vulnerable folk are already rushing to get their free flu jabs as winter starts to loom.

And they're beating much-loved former boxing champion Sir Henry Cooper to the punch.

For Henry, aged over 65 himself, is being used by The Department of Health in advertisements, posters and leaflets for their flu vaccination campaign launched this week. It uses the line "Don't get knocked out by flu, get your jab in first" saying that even fit and healthy people over 65 should get their free flu jab.

Health chiefs said the jabs can protect elderly people from an illness which could lead to complications and death.

The free injections are available for every person aged over 65 and people of all ages with the following conditions:

Chronic heart and kidney disease and respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis.

Diabetes mellitus

HIV/AIDS.

Dr Steve Gee, consultant surgeon for the North West Lancashire Health Authority, said: "Flu is a disease that's around some winters more than others. Most adults get better, but the situation is worse for the elderly or ill people. Flu is associated with increased mortality, among other factors. But that is one factor that can be stopped with the free jabs."

The over-65s campaign was a success last year -- previously jabs were available for the over-75s.

The campaign began on Monday, October 1, and runs until December 2, with the free vaccines available throughout. Free jabs are also available for people living in nursing homes or long-stay care homes.
