BURY police have announced plans for a new multi-million pound headquarters.

The present Irwell Street HQ, opened in 1970 and employing more than 300 police and support staff, could either be drastically refurbished; or demolished and rebuilt on the same site; or a brand new station could be built elsewhere in the heart of the town.

A new building is believed to be the likely option.

Greater Manchester Police Authority has recommended that a site be acquired for a "new Bury Divisional HQ", although plans are at an early stage.

The present building, the tallest in the borough, houses all sections, from the dog and horse units to CID and administration. It contains asbestos, a common building material 30 years ago, and although not dangerous, the structure is seen to be out-of-date. Officials within Greater Manchester Police Authority are also continuing their search for a new station for Prestwich. The existing station is dilapidated and has no public counter.

Chief Superintendent Phil Hollowood confirmed the plans but said nothing is likely to happen for up two years.

He said: "The maintenance costs, paid from the public purse, are steadily increasing at the Bury headquarters.

"The three options are being assessed in terms of costs and benefits. The police authority will be kept informed."

With regard to Prestwich, Mr Hollowood said the decision to move was taken some time ago as part of a property review.

He added: "We have been looking for suitable sites. Several have been identified but were found to be unsuitable."
