AGENCIES helping to match children with the right adoptive families in the Blackburn area will be staging events to encourage more people to take on the challenge as part of National Adoption Week this week.

The Blackburn Diocesan Adoption Agency and Blackburn with Darwen Council will be holding an information evening at the Hornby Lecture Theatre in Blackburn Library on Thursday, October 18 from 7.30pm.

They are keen to show people that those from all sorts of backgrounds will be considered as adoptive parents.

Brian Williams, director of the Blackburn Diocesan Adoption Agency, said: "These are children who have lost their first family because their birth family has not been able to care for them in a way which is appropriate for a variety of reasons.

"There are a lot of misconceptions about adoption, such as if you are single you won't be considered.

"For some children, it would be better to have one parent than to have no parent at all."

The group will also be manning a promotion stand at the Lower Peel Circle in the Trafford Centre, Manchester, throughout the week.
