TOWN and city rivalry came to the fore in a dispute between doormen from Manchester working in a Blackburn nightclub and local youths.

But Robin Phoenix, defending, told Blackburn magistrates that one doorman had told Stephen Quigley: "I'm from Manchester, where we shoot people like you."

Quigley, 19, of Greenhead Avenue, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour and was fined £100 with £55 costs.

Tom Snape, prosecuting, said police on duty outside C'est la Vie in the early hours saw a group of young men facing the club.

One of them was Quigley, who told an officer they were going to sort things out with some people from Manchester.

He was warned about his behaviour but continued to shout abuse towards the doormen in the club and was eventually arrested.

During the journey to the police station he head-butted and kicked the inner cage of the van.

Mr Phoenix said Quigley accepted his behaviour had not been of the required standard but he felt aggrieved by earlier events. He and his friends had been forcibly ejected after some trouble which had nothing to do with them.

"Having paid good money to get in he was upset at being thrown out, having done nothing wrong," said Mr Phoenix.
