A WIDOW today warned no motorist was safe after the killer driver who left her husband dead on a motorway still remained at large a year after the death.

A coroner yesterday recorded an open verdict on the death of Ron Cobbledick, 43, of Burnley Road East, Waterfoot, after he died on the M40.

His widow Audrey attended Ron's inquest in Warwickshire fearful corner Michael Coker could record an accidental death verdict.

But the coroner recorded an 'open' verdict allowing the police to continue to find the person responsible.

Ron was killed on October 30 last year after a truck driver mowed him down on the M40 just after 6am.

The truck driver fled, only stopping to remove the wreckage Ron's scooter from his lorry. The person has still not been found despite an appeal on BBC's Crimewatch.

Ron's body was hit by five other vehicles.

Mrs Cobbledick said that she wanted to see the driver face to face so he would know the devastation done to her family.

Mrs Cobbledick said: "The verdict was what we wanted. The open verdict means that if they get him they can press charges. The police told me that if the verdict was accidental death then they couldn't have done anything else.

"If it had been death by dangerous driving, they might not have been able to prove that. This allows them a bit of leeway - they could charge him with manslaughter.

"Hopefully they will get him and next time we meet the police it will be at the trial. It wouldn't have been so bad if he stopped, but he knew what he had done. Leaving him there was horrendous. He must not have a conscience, he is an animal.

"I want him to see me and know what he has done to my family, and would like his family and friends to to know what he has done. He has been going around for a year, having a drink with friends, knowing all the time.

"He has robbed my family of a wonderful person. Once he is caught we can begin to move on.

"Even if they catch him and he doesn't get sent down I want him off the road so he can't do it again.

"Anybody who knows anything should come forward.

"No-one will be safe on the road while my husband's killer remains free"

At the inquest motorist David Thorpe of Rowley Park, Stafford, described seeing a white man in an anorak looking under a lorry with a torch.

Other witnesses described seeing what they thought was a deer or sheep in the road as they drove south on the M40, near junction 16, in wind and heavy rain about 6am.

Mr Cobbledick had left his home in Burnley Road East about 3am on Monday October 30 en route to London where he worked during the week.

The crash was featured on the BBC Crimewatch show resulting in 180 calls and 10,000 posters were put up seeking further information, but no driver was found.

Police experts said bike debris and body tissue was spread over 100 metres of the motorway, near Henley-in-Arden, in several lanes.

Mr Cobbledick's 125cc bike was later found leaning against the crash barrier with his body on the carriageway. Mr Coker said: "There has been a great deal of investigations into this matter. That is the reason it has taken so long to resume this inquest. I can only express my horror at what I have heard."
