THE magic of books and the Internet will turn into a family affair at libraries across Bury this weekend.

As part of the national Family Learning Weekend, free web courses for children and their parents are being held, along with story readings for the young and young at heart.

And to add a touch of magic to proceedings, there will be activity sessions for fans of young sorcerer Harry Potter, using computer wizardry to design book covers and banners. Library staff will be available to lend a helping hand.

Bury Council arts and culture spokesman, Councillor Siobhan Costello, said: "There is so much going on at our libraries these days, it is a wonder that anyone has time to sit down and read a book! "This is a chance for parents and carers to join their children and really get involved. It is not just an opportunity to learn something new, but also a chance to have fun."

Internet sessions are aimed at making mums and dads more aware of what the worldwide web can offer and where to find it. The course is suited to those who have little experience.

With limited places available, it is advised that computer-based sessions are booked in advance.

Events are as follows:

Prestwich Library will hold a Harry Potter session from 10.30am-12.30pm on Saturday (Oct 13), and an Internet course on Sunday (Oct 14), 10am-11.30am and 12.30pm-2pm. Telephone 253 7214.

Moorside Community Library, Bury, will hold a Harry Potter event on Sunday, noon-1pm. Places should be booked on 253 5885.

Internet courses will be held at Tottington Library today (Fri Oct 12) 10am-noon and 1pm-3pm. To book telephone 01204 882839.
