ROSSENDALE Police are asking members of the public to be vigilant after a series of break-ins in the Helmshore, Rawtenstall and Haslingden areas.

Over the past week houses, garages and garden sheds have been targeted by burglars and local police suspect that the raids may be connected.

By raising awareness about the crimes, police believe they may increase their chances of catching the culprits.

Inspector Roger Ravenscroft of Rossendale West Division is responsible for co-ordinating the hunt for the criminals.

He said: "I am convinced that the majority of these offences are down to two or three individuals, and although we are making every effort to arrest them, I would encourage people to have a look at their own domestic security".

According to Inspector Ravenscroft, prevention is better than cure and taking the necessary precautions can reduce the likelihood of a property being targeted by thieves.

"Simple things such as making arrangements with neighbours to keep an eye on each other's property and fitting suitable locks and security lighting can make all the difference".

"I would also ask people not to hesitate in contacting us if they see any suspicious people or vehicles near their homes.

"If people want to put any information to the police or wish to report any suspicious activity or request any crime prevention advice they can contact us directly."

Crime prevention advice can be obtained directly from any local police station or on the Crimestoppers helpline.

Anyone with an with any information regarding the break-ins or who would like security advice should call Rawtenstall Police on: 01706 215242 or the free Crimestoppers helpline on: 0800 555 111.
