STUDENTS at a Rishton school enjoy learning so much they can even do it out of hours -- thanks to a £42,300 grant from the lottery.

Norden High School in Stourton Street was given the cash by the National Lottery New Opportunities Fund over three years to underwrite the cost of after-school learning clubs.

The scheme was launched this week after a year of hard work setting it up and teachers will be giving their time free to help pupils further their education and have fun at the same time.

A wide range of subjects will be on offer, including football training from Burnley Football Club coaches, a health and fitness club run by the school's PE staff and local artist Steve Elliott will be dropping in to help staff run an art murals club. There will also be a cyber cafe giving pupils the opportunity to surf the web, a language club where pupils can improve their Spanish using computer technology, and a performing arts club which offers drama and juggling.

The clubs are open to pupils of all ages and a snack and drink are provided at every session, with transport available for those who need it. Other facilities include guitar lessons and study groups with more to come.

Teacher Christine Hulland has been behind the scheme and aims to have a third of all 640 pupils involved by the end of the year. She said: "It took patience and effort to set up but we already have 100 involved and they enjoy themselves.

"The teachers are giving their time free which reflects well on them and makes the children feel more positive about school. It is good for their social skills, learning and achievement levels."

She added: "I started to put together a bid in October last year and with the help of Lancashire County Council, it came through in June. We we are delighted to finally be up and running."
