I'M not one who normally writes letters to newspapers, but the demolition of the bus station seems to be constantly referred to and yet it defies all logic.

Obviously for money, but someone wants to knock down the bus station with its 50 or so terminals, to make way for more shops.

These are supposed to be much needed -- although looking at the empty premises in the enlarged St George's Centre, that logic has confused me.

But let's assume that knocking down the bus station goes ahead and with it, many of the dilapidated premises in the vicinity. Then what?

We will then have the new shop owners moaning about the lack business. I can hear them now, saying that these new shops are miles away from the heart of the town. What we need to boost business is a bus terminal close by, so that shoppers from all over the region can commute right up to the shop door and then home again. Surely the logical thing to do is develop the land around the bus station for shops -- or is that just too obvious?
