Brentford 1 Morecambe 0

MORECAMBE'S FA Cup hopes came to an end at Brentford on Saturday, but their battling performance did little to dent their growing national reputation.

It took a late wonder-goal from Paul Gibb to separate the leading side in the second division from a club who were struggling in the Conference.

That only came after a moment of hesitation in the Morecambe midfield, when Adriano Rigoglioso thought his side had won a free kick and accidentally allowed Steve Coppell's side to win the ball in midfield.

Gibb received a pass some 30 yards or more from the Shrimps' goal and lined up a stunning drive which left Craig Mawson with no chance of making a save. Until then, a replay had looked increasingly likely as the organised defence of the visitor's frustrated Brentford, who struggled to get hold of the ball and create opportunities.

Morecambe youngster Dave Perkins, who has struggled for opportunities since he broke into the side last season, tested keeper Olafur Gottskalkson straight from the kick-off. And the pattern continued for most of the game, until's Gibb's late intervention, leaving Morecambe fans with just the memories of another memorable encounter with a higher ranked opponent.
