J YOUNG (Letters, November 20) states that the current Labour Government, "is the most right wing . . . we have had since the time of Oliver Cromwell."

Unfortunately, most people cannot remember back to 1658, but let us look at the record of the Labour Government since 1997.

We see the lowest unemployment rates for more than 20 years, the lowest inflation rates for 30 years, low mortgage rates, introduction of the first minimum wage, 1.1 million more people in work than in 1997, falling crime rates, reduced VAT on fuel, increases for pensioners above the increase in earnings, above-inflation investment in schools and hospitals.

Hardly the stuff of a 'right-wing' government!

These are the bread and butter issues that concern people the most and perhaps explain why the Government was re-elected with an unprecedented majority in June.

No one is claiming that the Government has got everything right and, of course, much remains to be done. Rather than turning the clock back to 1658, one only has to turn it back to 1979-1997 to see what damage a real 'right wing' government did!
