POLICE in Blackburn have appealed for witnesses to an assault which left a 32-year-old man needing staples to a deep head wound.

The man, who was attacked in King Street in the early hours of Saturday morning was left with a deep, jagged cut to his head, which was badly swollen after the incident. The cut had to be stapled.

Detectives hope late night revellers in the town centre might have witnessed the attack, which happened at about 1.40am.

The victim was walking along King Street when he was struck on the head with an object, although police are not yet sure what kind of instrument.

DC Julie Peters said: "We are sure someone saw this, there were certainly people around who must have seen this. We would ask anyone who saw something to come forward."
