IN his capacity as a spokesman for and defender of all things Lib-Dem, Roy Davies (Letters, November 22) does his best to avoid answering serious questions about the Lib Dems from the comfort of his armchair, but sadly fails.

When Neil Farrar made his comments about asylum seekers (Letters, November 14) he made a valid point. This government has imposed some of the most stringent laws on asylum seekers, yet the Lib Dems have called for them to be relaxed.

Can you imagine the cheers in the camps in Calais if the Lib Dems ever seized power? Free-for-all would be the result.

What would they do if they won control in Blackburn -- open the flood gates here, too, as a favour to long-suffering Dover?

The same can be said for the disability benefit -- the Lib Dems have called for tests to be abolished. The old 'bad back syndrome' would escalate beyond control.

As for Councillor Charles Mills, I happen to agree that when someone is paid by us to represent our interests, it is up to them to spot the problems as they happen and not wait for weeks until you get a nice big splash in the local paper.

If the Liberals spent less time trying to get the council to take on expensive and bureaucratic Area Committees -- yet more taxpayers' money -- they could spend more time doing what they are paid to do, namely help the borough run smoothly.
