YOUNGSTERS at St Gabriel's School in Blackburn, took a step back in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their school.

The Wilworth Crescent school opened in 1901 and to celebrate 100 years of learning, children and teachers got out the dressing-up box to wear Edwardian clothes for two days.

Harry Sharples, headteacher at St Gabriel's, said: "It was a great success. All the children entered into the spirit of both days. The school has around 240 children, and nearly all came in costume.

"The oldest school photo we have is from 1908, so we sent a copy of it home to parents. It was mostly starched collars for the boys and long dresses for the girls."

The well-dressed children took part in an Edwardian Music Hall, and got the chance to experience what life was like for children 100 years ago.

The youngsters tried out Edwardian games and toys, including the timeless game of hoop-la, and studied the Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling.

Mr Sharples said: "Two teachers ran a living workshop, and gave Edwardian lessons and activities. We found the workshops especially successful, and plan to repeat them in the future."
