IT was penalty woe all round for Stanley as Peter Cavanagh missed a last minute spot kick in normal time and then the Reds crashed out of the FA Umbro Trophy second round replay on penalties to Altrincham.

They lost 3-1 on spot-kicks with only goalkeeper Jamie Speare converting for the Reds as their UniBond Premier League rivals sealed a trip to North Ferriby in the next round.

Stanley were the better team on the night and should have won the game in normal time creating plenty of chances.

The Reds were forced to rearrange their side after just 10 minutes when they lost playmaker Mark Shirley, just returning after a long term knee injury. He limped off with a calf injury to be replaced by Mark Brennan.

Stanley came close when Paul Mullin headed wide then a long kick by Speare just evaded Lutel James, Altrincham goalkeeper Stuart Coburn beating the Reds striker to the ball.

Altrincham got in on the action, a quick passing move saw Rob Thornley's diving header fly over the bar.

In end to end action, Carden shot over the bar while Cavanagh headed clear at the other end when Altrincham dangerman Thornley came close.

Reds left back Barrie Hart set up both James and Jonathan Smith but they could not break the deadlock.

The second half saw Stanley continue to create chances through Cavanagh, Carden and Smith but against the run of play Altrincham went ahead, centre half Mark Sertori took a free kick on the halfway line which substitute Anthony Hargreaves floated a header over Speare.

The Reds drew level shortly after after another good run from Payne. The wide man found Carden who helped the ball on to James, the striker going past Chris Adams and hit the ball across the diving Coburn to score.

Stanley were on top and just before the end of normal time the Reds could have sealed it when James was brought down as he was about to shoot.

The referee awarded a penalty and Stanley captain Cavanagh stepped up and struck the ball to Coburn's right, the Altrincham custodian making a tremendous full length save to stop what would have been the winning goal.

Both teams had chances in extra time but neither side could make a chance count and so to sudden death.

Speare saved Rob Thornton's first penalty and then the goalkeeper scored for Stanley to make it to 1-0 to the Reds. Swannick beat Speare to make it 1-1 and then Coburn saved from Cavanagh.

Craney scored to make it 2-1 but then assistant manager Jimmy Bell missed the goal completely.

Reds keeper Speare saved from Sertori, Coburn then saved from Carden but Poland scored the decisive kick to take Altrincham through.
