PLANS for housing instead of much need open space in one of Morecambe's most deprived areas have come under fire from councillors.

Poulton ward Cllrs Tricia Heath and Shirley Burns say they will fight plans for a residential development on the former Clark Street fire station.

Cllrs Heath and Burns say discussions with local residents have revealed the need for a community centre or open space in the area.

High density housing and a lack of green space are also cited as major problems for the Poulton area.

Cllr Heath said: "The city council have asked the county council to sell us the land so that we can provide much needed open space in Poulton.

"Local residents will be greatly disappointed that the county council seems to be disregarding their views.

"The last thing Poulton needs is more housing."

Cllr Burns added: "After Labour's disastrous decision to build on the Poulton market site against local's wishes, we'd hoped they might be more sympathetic with the fire station site.

"Poulton is desperately in need of community and open space."

A county council spokesman said: "The plan was submitted by the county council acting as agents for the fire and rescue service.

"The plan has been submitted simply to establish a possible future use for the building."

Anyone wishing to make an objection to the plan, or even take advantage of new city council rules allowing members of the public to peak at planning meetings, should contact Planning Services at Palatine Hall, Lancaster quoting application No. 01/02/01271/OUT.
