WE'VE all seen the TV programme - ordinary people designing and building their own dream homes - but it could become a reality for some people here in Lancaster.

A new group is being set up this Saturday, December 8, to encourage and support people who want to build their own homes.

The Lancaster Self Build Project has organised a one-day workshop with the Walter Segal Trust, a group which exists to assist self builders who will talk people through the whole process, from forming a group through to finance, planning, methods and materials.

An experienced self builder will also be on hand to describe successful self builds around the country and answer any questions.

Paul Speight of Lancaster Self Build Project said: "We aim to make the process as inclusive as possible. Many different skills will be required and more developed along the way...so don't be put off if you don't know one end of a hammer form the other. Whilst building your own home can be fun, it is also a realisable solution to housing problems suffered by many in Lancaster. Either way it is most readily achieved through helping others who in turn help you. Come along even if you are sceptical as you may well be surprised."

Self build projects use new materials that are sustainable and very environmentally friendly such as masonite, a very strong timber made from wood and compressed fibres.

A grant from Lancashire Environmental Action Fund is available to fund up to 10 people free at the workshop.

Green County Cllr John Sear said: "The Walter Segal method is an ideal way for ordinary people to get involved in building their own homes the way they want them. It is also good for the environment because the principal material used is wood. I would encourage anyone who is interested to join us on December 8."

The workshop starts at the Gregson Centre at 9.30pm and the cost is £45 full rate, £20 for self build members and £10 for concessions.
