FIRST Division strugglers Sheffield Wednesday could be ready to join the race for Ewood outcast Marlon Broomes.

Sources in Yorkshire today claimed the Owls are planning a swoop for Broomes when his loan spell with Grimsby runs out at the end of the week.

But they are likely to be just one of a posse of clubs who are keen on signing the defender who has resurrected his career during his three-month stint with the Mariners.

"I've heard about a few clubs being interested, to be honest, but nothing is concrete at the moment," said Broomes.

"I'd become a forgotten man at Blackburn because I'd spent so long in the reserves but people are starting to talk about me again now, which is brilliant.

"And my agent is speaking to a few different people at the moment in the hope that something might happen next week."

Broomes completes his loan spell with the Mariners against Wolves on Friday night.

And Grimsby boss Lennie Lawrence has already indicated he could be ready to move for the 23-year-old on a permanent basis.

Wednesday are also keen on the former England Under 21 international and new boss Terry Yorath had him watched at the weekend.

But, though Broomes is available on a free, the cash-strapped Owls may struggle to find the money for his wages after recently signing Dean Windass on loan.
