WINTER WALKERS: In a bid to aid the Help The Aged charity, 1,500 youngsters took part in a sponsored walk around Bury's Manchester Road park. All the entrants walked a maximum of 30 laps and had the chance to meet Manchester City footballers, Peter Barnes and Gary Owen, as well as Geoffrey Heyes, Bungle, Zippy and George from TV's Rainbow.

NOT AGAIN! A thief with a strong nerve ransacked an upstairs room of a Bury pub and helped himself to cash and jewellery worth over £900 while the landlord and his wife were serving downstairs. It was the second raid at the New Inn, Walmersley Road, in three months. SAFE HOUSE: Nimrod, the life-size reclining male nude which brightened up the ornamental lake in Townside Field Park, Bury, was to be given a new home. The bronze and fibreglass statue had been removed from its plinth after being severely damaged by vandals. Bury Council agreed the safest place for Nimrod was to put him within the glass partitioned garden area at Whitefield branch library.

BREATH OF FRESH AIR: Bury was in third place in the Clean Air Table in Greater Manchester. Salford came out top in the smoke control league while Wigan were gasping for air at the foot of the table.

WALK THIS WAY: Plans were being considered in conjunction with Bury's proposed £3.7 million road-rail interchange to turn part of Kay Garden into a pedestrian walkway.

UN-FARE THIEVES: Police were seeking robbers who took a taxi driver's takings and his taxi. The driver was taking two men to Whitefield when at Simister Lane, Prestwich, he was grabbed by the throat and had a weapon pressed against his neck. He was ordered to hand over his £12 takings before being forced out of the cab.
