BLACKBURN manager Graeme Souness believes Marlon Broomes' imminent transfer to Grimsby will be a good move for the defender.

Broomes, 24, has been on loan at Grimsby and hopes to make the switch permanent inside the next 24 hours.

The centre-half has failed to win a regular first-team place at Rovers and Souness feels dropping down a league should help the former England Under-21 international restart his once-promising career.

"Marlon wants to be playing first-team football," he said. "He's at an age where he's tasted first-team football here and he wants that regularly.

"We can't offer him that at the moment and if he can go there and restart his career that would be a good thing for him. It's not happened here, but a change of scene may make all the difference to him."

Jeff Kenna is also poised to leave Ewood Park on a permanent basis and join Wigan.

The 31-year-old defender, who is surplus to requirements at Blackburn, is on loan at Wigan and is set to sign inside the next 24 hours.
