A RAFT of new traffic regulations are being proposed to help make Blackburn with Darwen's roads safer.

Speed limits on the A666 Bolton Road in Darwen and the A675 Belmont Road, Belmont, are set to be dropped to 50mph in a bid to reduce the number of accidents along both stretches.

Under the A666 plan, a 50mph limit would be introduced from the end of the 40mph speed limit and run to the borough's boundary with Bolton.

A report to councillors revealed that since 1998 there had been 40 casualties along the road, and two deaths.

On the A675, the 50mph limit will be introduced at the end of Belmont Village and run to the boundary with Chorley.

Some 27 people have been injured along that stretch of road since 1998.

Both stretches of road currently have the national speed limit imposed on them.

Council officers have been given permission to start talking to the police about the plans.

Other proposed new traffic measures include:

Prohibition of waiting on Heys Lane, Ewood; Alexandra Road, Corporation Park; Grantham Street, Mill Hill.

One way traffic in Brown Street in the Shear Brow area.

Abandoning waiting restriction on waiting in Preston Old Road, Feniscliffe.

Revocation of one-way traffic order in Francis Street, Mill Hill.
