CEMETERIES are a private place of worship and the policing of them would be a sensitive -- not to mention difficult -- affair.

Blackburn with Darwen Council bosses say they are just as sickened by these acts as any of the families involved and offer their heartfelt condolences. But just what are they doing to stop it? Quite a lot, argues Tom Wilson, head of outdoor amenities at Blackburn with Darwen Council.

After thieves struck at the grave of Kirsty Wright he said: "We have done our best to stop this sort of thing happening and we have asked cemetery staff to be extra vigilant during the dark winter months.

"The fact that we are unable to provide round-the-clock policing in parks and cemeteries adds to the problems and we urge members of the public to contact police or the council if they ever see anybody carrying out these mindless acts."

The council's plea to those responsible fell on deaf ears and a little more than a week later thieves struck again. This time a teddy bear was taken from the resting place of little Jake McGeough, who was just 18 months old when he died in tragic circumstances at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, in July.

Debbie Cunliffe, the vice chairman for the Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley, branch of the Cruse Bereavement Service, said such incidents were highly damaging.

She said: "At Christmas time many families wish to remember those who have died by placing flowers, toys and gifts on graves.

"The Lancashire Evening Telegraph has recently highlighted occasions when parents have been distraught. I have no doubt that theft from graves happens throughout the country, and it is very sad that there are those who are reduced to such a crime, with little thought for those who have already suffered a great loss."

But still the council insists it is on top of the problem.

Mr Wilson said: "It is a difficult situation as this is a public place and there does need to be unrestricted access during the day so that people can visit their loved one's graves.

"The staff at the crematorium are extra vigilant and will report anyone acting suspiciously.

"These incidents have been reported to the police who are investigating."
