DARWEN boss Steve Wilkes warned his side about the possible effects of a cup hangover -- his troops didn't listen.

After seeing off Conference outfit Morecambe 4-2 in the Lancashire Marsden Trophy on Tuesday, it took a last minute equaliser to claim a point against the side second to bottom in the NWC League's second division.

"It was very disappointing. I was telling them going out on to the field that we had to earn a win, but the attitude was wrong," said Wilkes.

"It was almost as though we just had to turn up after Tuesday, but football is not like that."

Darwen were lacking Paul Baker, counted out with flu, but Wilkes was far from happy with his side despite some mitigating circumstances.

"The pitch was a disgrace and the game shouldn't have been played, but it was and the conditions are the same for both sides," he explained.

"We knew we needed to roll our sleeves up but that didn't happen, though I have to say that at least we did show enough character to gain a point late on."

Darwen twice conceded from corners with Oldham defender Danny Jones scoring with a header after 29 minutes and then Anthony Wealdes put the home side back in front on 85 minutes -- again with a header from a corner.

In between times Dennis Hill had put Darwen back on terms ten minutes into the second half with a 25 yard stunner.

However, Darwen had not made the most of their chances with Hill twice failing to convert from Wilkes crosses, then he was caught offside when he decided to turn home Andy Walsh's goalbound header and Matt Swailes twice missed out when one-on-one with the keeper.

But Swailes made amends when, in the final minutes, Wilkes curled a free kick to the near post and the striker got up to knock in the equaliser.
