LEIGH RMI manager Steve Waywell is hoping to keep hold of goalkeeper Mark Westhead for as long as possible to aid the Railwaymen's fight against the drop.

The former Bolton and Wycombe Wanderers keeper was targeted by League of Wales side Barry Town as a replacement for David Forde, following his £75,000 move to West Ham.

Barry put in seven days' notice for the 26-year-old but Waywell is keeping his fingers crossed that Westhead doesn't move just yet.

"He's still with us at the moment and apparently Barry have signed two goalkeepers," he said.

Even if nothing comes of Barry's interest, Waywell admits he could find it difficult to keep the highly-rated Westhead at cash-strapped Hilton Park.

He added: "He's a good goalkeeper. We can't keep hold of him because he's not on a contract.

"I would love to put him on one but I'm not in a position to do that so every game he plays for us is an added bonus.

"He wants full-time football and really for him it's about waiting for the right move to come along."
