TWO green-fingered teenagers are helping horticulturists celebrate 90 years by becoming the youngest ever members of the committee.

Jonathan Nash and John Wilsher are only 16 but have volunteered to help make sure Edenfield Horticultural Society's 90th anniversary is a huge success. They have already come up with new ideas.

Jonathan, of Crow Lane, Ramsbottom, provided the catering for a number of shows held at St Philip's Church hall, Stubbins, last year. John, from Bury, a student at Bury College, got involved with the show through his grandmother and show secretary Betty Garvey.

Both have entered the show as children and are now considering entering the adult classes.

Jonathan's grandmother Dorothy Nash said: "I am very pleased that he volunteered. He is hoping to fit in some gardening while he completes his GCSEs."

John has taken over producing the schedule for the society's show and has also suggested they start selling advertising space in the brochure -- an idea which is likely to be pursued next year.

Betty said: "When Jonathan volunteered I thought it would be better if he had someone else there his own age and John agreed.

"It is just brilliant. They work very hard and have come up with some good ideas. When they have helped out at previous shows they have helped to set the room out, Jonathan provided the catering and they helped to tidy up and restore the room afterwards.

"They really give teenagers a good name and we are delighted to have them as members of our committee."

The society is planning a trip to Harrogate Horticultural Society Show in April. Tickets are priced £13 and include entry and coach journey. Contact Betty on 01706 823449.
