REWIND to the season of 1993 when six-year-old Chris Leck pulled on a rugby shirt for the first time and promptly scored five tries against Ilkley.

A star was born.

Fast forward a few years and Leck dived over for a hat-trick of tries for Calder Vale in a win against Burnley's twin town Vitre.

Not doing much for Anglo-French relations but he earned himself a rugby scholarship to the famous Rossall School in Fleetwood -- two years before the usual entry age.

Pause at the present day and Leck, now an unassuming 15-year-old, is in the England Schools Under 16s squad and has won an England RFU Academy scholarship with Sale Sharks.

"Pulling on that England shirt was the best feeling for me," said the former St Theodores pupil. "It felt so right and I really look forward to pulling it on again."

Confident words from the young scrum half who is showing all the signs that he has what it takes to go all the way.

"He's a bit special," said his dad Phil. "But you would probably get more chat out of the Man on the Moon! Chris doesn't really talk about what he has achieved so it is left to me to blow his trumpet."

And what he has achieved is worth talking about.

For young Leck captained both the Lancashire Schools and North of England Schools to championship glory scoring an average of a try a game.

He also broke in to the Rossall School first team where he is following in the footsteps of England internationals Ian Botham and Peter Winterbottom, who was also a British Lion.

Now he is a part of the RFU's £8 million academy dream to unearth the England World Cup winning team of 2007.

"Not much pressure on him then is there?" joked dad Phil. "To be honest, he has been under a lot of stress and strain in recent months attending trials but he has taken it all in his stride."

Leck ranks Jonny Wilkinson as his favourite player and his dad can see the same attitude and mentality in his son as the England outside half.

"Chris's attitude is fantastic. He does get nervous before matches but once he gets on the pitch it all clicks in."

So fast forward to the future and Chris Leck runs out at Twickenham for England remembering those five tries he scored against Ilkley as a six-year-old.

"It was all down to the coaching staff," said Leck in his unassuming manner.

"And if I ever get to make it as a full international I will never forget Calder Vale because that is where it all started for me."

Enough said.
