CRIMINALS in Colne could soon be caught red handed following the announcement that £376,000 of government cash will be spent on a CCTV system in the town.

The funding has been approved through the government's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

The CCTV scheme will consist of 14 cameras complete with help points.

It will cover Albert Road and car parks such as Linden Road and behind the library, with additional cameras at the train station and business and retail park in North Valley Road.

Council leader Coun Azhar Ali said: "I am delighted with this success because the cameras will be a big boost to community safety in Colne centre. following numerous public surveys which have shown massive support for cameras."

Colne councillor David Whalley, who was one the leading campaigners for cameras, said: "I am delighted with this announcement. The cameras in Nelson have proven to be a real success not only cutting crime but also reducing the fear of crime which is equally as important.."

The CCTV system in Nelson has been successful and Inspector Richard Morgan, of Colne Police, said a similar scheme in Colne would be greatly welcomed.

John Denham, home office minister, will be in Colne tomorrow to give the government's seal of approval. A detailed programme of works will be published shortly.
